Ideas to decorate surfaces with light

The light has not only the practical function of allowing us to see well in a room, but it also serves to create the right atmosphere and to decorate the room itself.

Walls and furniture, appropriately lit, acquire new charm and value, making every room warm and welcoming.

I will explain some simple way to make light a real decorating tool.

First of all, you have to know that the light, projected on a wall at a certain distance and in a uniform manner, makes to appear the surface of the wall more smooth and less irregular, because it reduces the shadows. If you want, therefore, to highlight the details of coatings and finishes, just bring the light source, making sure it hits the surface with a tilted angle: as if by magic, antique brick walls, fine silky wallpapers or wooden boiserie will gain volume and three-dimensionality.

The light has the ability to bring out any type of surface, including fabrics, shiny or matte. A woolen blanket, for example, by absorbing light seems softer, smooth and warm. Satin and silk, otherwise, if illuminated closely become brighter and return brightness to the area. Keep in mind all this, so as to highlight precious curtains, soft upholstered sofas or warm carpets.

All this holds true for the defects: a close-angled light will highlight any imperfections, so be careful to plasterboard walls, masonry, ceramic or mosaic realized in a bad manner.

To decorate with the light also means to use color. To light up a room with light sources emitting white light of two different temperatures, it creates a strong contrast effect. If, for example, you use for the perimeter of the room a warm light with 2400K and at the same time you illuminate an architectural detail at the center – as a column – with a cold light with 5000k, the ultimate effect you have is to a block of ice to center of the room. It can’t be unnoticed!

An alternative is the use of colored lights that can give a very dramatic effect in a room with white walls. Used very often in bars and restaurants, the colored lights can be fun especially at home, perhaps to add a little color tone on a ladder or on glass shelves.

The most widespread type of colored light is the RGB LEDs, composed of three light emitting diodes in the primary colors red, green and blue, that allow to obtain a wide range of colors, changing time to time by pressing a button.

Very used are also colored Led filaments installed on the ceiling, that create starry skies in showers or in children’s room.

The third way to decorate with light is to play with the shadows that may form with passage of light through perforated surfaces. If, for example, you buy a wooden panel worked with oriental motives and you place it to a wall, once illuminated the space between the wall and the panel, anything arount will be decorated by shadows similar to a precious embroidery , ethereal and beautiful, making the room very charming.

The same effect can be achieved more simply using lampshades of table lamps, floor lamps and suspensions perforated or machined so as to create lights and shadows. Visit flea markets or stores with objects coming from the East: you’ll find any shape and size.
